CSR2 Purple Star vs Gold Star: How Much Faster, Really?
CSR2 MODS · October 19, 2026
Every CSR2 player hits the same decision sooner or later. The car you want comes in two versions: a regular gold-star one, and a purple-star one that's rarer, more expensive and usually tied to an event that's already over. Is purple actually faster, and by how much?
Forum answers range from “night and day” to “it's just a colour”. Neither is right. We went through our CSR2 world records sheet, found every car that has a record in both versions in the same tier, and compared them directly. There are 226 of them, which is enough to stop guessing.
What a purple star is
In CSR2, a purple star marks the premium version of a car. Many purple-star cars come from Showdowns and other limited events, which is why so many players end up wanting one after the window has closed. The same model often also exists as a standard gold-star car that's easier to get.
On paper the two can look identical. That's part of the confusion, and we'll come back to it.
How we measured it
Our sheet lists the fastest known time for each car in its tier, along with its PP, star level and tune. For this comparison we only used cars that appear twice in the same tier, once as purple and once as gold, so every comparison is like for like: same model, same tier, same race.
Tiers 1 and 2 had no cars recorded in both versions, so the results below cover Tiers 3, 4 and 5. Those are also the tiers where the question matters most.
The headline result
| Tier | Cars with both versions | Purple faster | Typical gap | Largest gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 3 | 13 | 13 of 13 | 0.045s | 0.068s |
| Tier 4 | 52 | 51 of 52 | 0.048s | 0.163s |
| Tier 5 | 161 | 154 of 161 | 0.051s | 0.268s |
| All | 226 | 218 of 226 | 0.050s |
“Typical gap” is the median: half the cars are closer than this, half further apart. Figures are from our sheet at the time of writing; records improve, so treat them as a picture of the pattern.
So purple is faster almost every time, but usually by about five hundredths of a second. That's not night and day. Whether it's worth paying for depends entirely on where you race, which is the more useful half of this article.
The PP trap
Here's the detail that catches people out. In 221 of the 226 pairs, the purple and gold versions have exactly the same PP. Whatever makes the purple car quicker, the PP number doesn't show it.
That matters in two ways. If you're comparing two cars by PP alone, you can't tell a purple from a gold one, so check the star. And if you're copying a tune from the records sheet, make sure it's for the right version. A purple tune on a gold car, or the other way round, can leave time on the table. Our CSR2 tuning guide covers how to adapt a tune that doesn't quite match.
Where purple makes the biggest difference
Most pairs sit close to the 0.05s average, but a handful don't. These are the biggest gaps on the sheet, all in Tier 5:
| Car | Purple | Gold | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ferrari SF90 Stradale | 6.992 | 7.260 | 0.268s |
| Porsche 911 Turbo S (991) | 7.977 | 8.229 | 0.252s |
| Audi R8 Spyder V10 | 8.096 | 8.318 | 0.222s |
| Koenigsegg Gemera | 6.740 | 6.952 | 0.212s |
In Tier 4, the biggest gap belongs to the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance at 0.163s. If one of these is your target car, the purple version isn't a luxury. A quarter of a second is the difference between the top of a leaderboard and the middle of it.
When the gold car is quicker
Eight pairs go the other way, with the gold record ahead. The biggest is the Ferrari 488 Pista, where the gold record is 0.129s faster, followed by the BMW ACS8 in Tier 4 (0.109s) and the Brabham BT62R (0.076s). The Bugatti Divo and Ferrari F12tdf are within three hundredths either way.
This doesn't mean those gold cars are secretly better. A record is a single best run by a real player, and the version more people race tends to get the better driver on a good day. What it does show is that the purple advantage is small enough for launch, shifting and tune to outweigh it. That's worth remembering before you pay a premium for purple on a car where the gap is tiny.
Why purple rules the top of Tier 5
Look at the very top of each tier and the picture changes. Of the 20 fastest records in Tier 5, all 20 are purple-star cars. Purple cars make up 69% of every timed Tier 5 car on the sheet, but 100% of the top twenty.
| Tier | Purple cars in the top 20 | Purple share of all timed cars |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 5 | 20 of 20 | 69% |
| Tier 4 | 10 of 20 | 50% |
| Tier 3 | 9 of 20 | 31% |
| Tier 2 | 2 of 20 | 13% |
| Tier 1 | 4 of 16 | 25% |
The reason is the size of the margins. In Tier 5 the ten fastest cars on our sheet are separated by less than a tenth of a second, so a 0.05s edge is worth half the spread of the entire top ten. Lower down, cars differ much more from each other, and picking the right chassis and tune matters far more than the star. Our best CSR2 cars by tier breakdown shows how tight each tier is.
So, should you go purple?
It depends on what you're racing for.
- Chasing the top of Tier 5: go purple. At the top, everyone is fully built and well driven, and five hundredths decides races.
- Racing Tiers 1 to 3: gold is usually fine. Your time goes further on a better tune and a cleaner launch than on the star.
- Your target car has a big gap: if it's one of the cars above with a gap of 0.15s or more, purple is worth it in any tier.
- The gap is tiny or reversed: save the money. A gold car you drive well will match it.
- You already own the gold version: finish building and tuning it before deciding you need purple. Most players are further from their car's record than from the purple-gold gap.
One more thing worth knowing. Many purple-star cars come from Showdowns and limited events, so if you miss the window there's no grinding your way back to it. That's the most common reason people order a specific car from us: every car in our CSR2 car collection can be delivered stock or fully maxed, purple and gold versions included. If a particular one isn't listed, ask in chat before paying.
Purple or gold: the verdict
Purple-star cars are faster in 218 of the 226 pairs we compared, typically by 0.05 seconds, and the PP number doesn't show it. That edge decides races at the top of Tier 5, where every one of the fastest twenty records is purple. Below that, a gold car you've tuned and practised with is usually the smarter buy. Purple isn't the only hidden speed in CSR2, either: our look at Elite Customs levels found gaps up to forty times bigger.
Frequently asked questions
What is a purple-star car in CSR2?
A purple star marks the premium version of a car. Many purple-star cars come from Showdowns and limited events, which is why they can't be chased once the event is over. The same model often also exists as a regular gold-star car.
How much faster is a purple-star car than the gold-star version?
Across the 226 cars on our world records sheet that have both versions in the same tier, the purple-star record is faster in 218 of them. The typical gap is 0.05 seconds, and the largest is just over a quarter of a second.
Do purple-star cars have a higher PP?
Usually not. In 221 of the 226 pairs we compared, both versions have exactly the same PP. The speed difference doesn't show up in the PP number, so two cars with matching PP can still run different times.
Is a purple-star car worth it?
In Tier 5, usually yes: every one of the 20 fastest records there is purple, and the top ten are separated by less than a tenth of a second. In lower tiers a well-tuned gold car you can launch consistently will often do just as well.
